The Single Women Empowerment Program is a holistic initiative designed to uplift and support single women by fostering leadership, self-reliance, and economic independence. At its core is the establishment of the Mahila Mandal, a group of 300 single women from the village, serving as a platform for connection, collaboration, and empowerment.
The program began with local surveys to identify the challenges faced by single women and now actively engages with both surveyed and unsurveyed women for leadership development to build confidence and decision-making skills. Regular village meetings encourage dialogue and collective action in a society where single women are denied public spaces and social engagement.
An important example of a village engagement campaign is creating a call for a symbolic offering of a handful of grains and a donation of one rupee (or more). This idea draws inspiration from a tradition in Marathwada, where a rupee is placed on the forehead of the deceased, and during the ‘visava’ (a ritual stop during the final journey), a handful of paddy (grains) is given. This campaign imparts an important lesson: while these offerings are essential for the deceased, a rupee and grains are also necessary for the living. The campaign encourages people to support Ankur in its mission of dignity for women and the marginalized communities, with the villagers participating through similar donations of rupees and grains.
To promote economic independence, the program provides livelihood support, including training in organic farming and four-wheeler driving, enabling women to access new opportunities. Additionally, women are informed about government schemes and legal rights through training sessions and practice sessions in government offices, building their confidence in accessing public resources.
By addressing social, economic, and emotional needs, the program empowers single women to lead independent and fulfilling lives while fostering a stronger, more inclusive community.
The Kiln Workers and Children Empowerment Program is dedicated to improving the lives of kiln workers and their families by addressing economic and educational challenges, given how their vulnerability puts them at risk for experiencing adverse life events and outcomes.
Local surveys were conducted to understand the needs and conditions of kiln workers and their children. Community discussions are organized to address critical issues, such as economic stability and educational access, encouraging collective problem-solving and awareness.
A key focus of the program is supporting the education of kiln workers’ children. Ankur plays a vital role by arranging school supplies and supporting access to schooling to ensure children have the resources and skills they need for a brighter future.
To foster collaboration, meetings are also held with kiln owners to discuss ways to improve working conditions and support for workers and their families. Through its comprehensive approach, the Kiln Workers and Children Empowerment Program bridges the gap between workers, their families, and kiln owners, building a more equitable and supportive community.
Visava Samvad Kendra is a dedicated counseling center established to support women by providing emotional guidance and legal assistance. The center serves as a safe space where women facing violence and challenges can seek advice, share their concerns, and access resources to navigate personal and legal challenges.
In addition to offering counseling services, the center equips women with practical knowledge about their legal rights, empowering them to make informed decisions and advocate for themselves. Through its compassionate and holistic approach, Visava Samvad Kendra strives to create a supportive environment where women can build confidence and work towards a more secure and empowered future.
